5/28/2023 0 Comments Death and the Conjuror by Tom Mead![]() ![]() When the investigation dovetails into that of an apparently-impossible theft, the detectives consider the possibility that the two transgressions are related. As he and the Inspector interview the colorful cast of suspects among the psychiatrist's patients and household, they uncover no shortage of dark secrets―or motives for murder. Spector has a knack for explaining the inexplicable, but even he finds that there is more to this mystery than meets the eye. For who better to make sense of the impossible than one who traffics in illusions? Stumped by the confounding scene, the Scotland Yard detective on the case calls on retired stage magician-turned-part-time sleuth Joseph Spector. There are no clues, no witnesses, and no evidence of the murder weapon. In 1930s London, celebrity psychiatrist Anselm Rees is discovered dead in his locked study, and there seems to be no way that a killer could have escaped unseen. A magician-turned-sleuth in pre-war London solves three impossible crimes. ![]() ![]() David Constantine's new translation captures the novel's lyric clarity, and his introduction and notes illuminate Goethe's achievement. Werther's searching introspection and the passionate intensity with which he bares his soul have an immediacy that is all the more powerful for being expressed in letters charting the course of his emotions, they give added drama to the unfolding account. Goethe's story of a sensitive young artist alienated from society channelled the Romantic sensibility of the day and led to a wave of imitations. Overwhelmed by his feelings, Werther begins to see only one way to escape from his anguish. Goethe drew on his own unhappy experiences to tell the story of Werther, a young man tormented by his love for Lotte, a tender-hearted girl who is promised to someone else. If you like flowery prose full of meandering descriptions, you probably won't like his books – but personally, I love a story that just gets on with things.įor those not familiar with Horowitz's mystery novels for adults, we'll divide them up by series below. Horowitz's writing style is simple and straightforward, the sort of writing you mostly don't notice. ![]() Along with writing a couple of James Bond books with permission from the Ian Fleming estate, he's penned a number of mystery/detective fiction novels. Bailey! Entertaining and a fun read!I received a complimentary copy, however, all opinions are my own. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future. Bailey pulled off an entertaining and interesting Regency Romance. Overall, I think this author did a great job, while I felt some things were a bit repetitive, I felt Ms. ![]() Although, both parties were being a bit manipulated, they soon come to terms with their feelings, when they nearly lost it all. What the hero believed was not a true understanding of the circumstances. Written in third person POV, the revenge part of the hero, needed a bit more telling, some readers may misconstrue the premise or not totally understand. Bailey's writing style is interesting and entertaining. The banter, struggles and challenges along with the plot pulled this story together nicely. I did find it a bit slow at times, predictable, but entertaining, humorous at times, and enjoyed watching the H/H with their witty banter and laugh out loud moments. Bailey is a new author, and for a debut author did a great job with this story. Bailey is an entertaining Regency Romance. ![]() 5/27/2023 0 Comments Undocumented by Tings Chak![]() ![]() This work was republished in a special edition by Ad Astra Comix in 2017.Ĭhak has contributed writing and artwork to various publications, including Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, Peoples' Dispatch, Brasil de Fato, Scapegoat: Architecture, Landscape, and Political Economy, Room Magazine, The Funambulist: Politics of Space and Bodies, Stonecutter Journal, Model Minority, Briarpatch, Shameless Magazine, The Site Magazine, Arcade, and Sante Fe Literary Review, among others.
